'Tis the Season
This year I decided not to send out Christmas cards...but everything else was done in record time. Well, I still have cookies to frost. But, I fear I may have jinxed myself by omitting this one simple holiday tradition. This past week, I learned that my car is in need of front wheel bearings--to the tune of $700+; I somehow managed to lose my billfold--all contents included (driver's license, credit/debit cards and shopping receipts); and I was unable to get into my garage Friday when I returned from work due to the snow drifts across the driveway! I have determined that I will need more than just Christmas carols to get me into the holiday spirit---I will be drinking spirits of all kinds before the New Year arrives!! And hoping Santa brings a damn snowblower!!

Ahead of Myself
Retailers and media have mourned the loss of the extra weekend before Christmas this year. I have been a step ahead of the frenzy. As a part of my financial diet, I bought gift cards throughout the year and started getting Christmas gifts early. I was done decorating and wrapping the Saturday after Thanksgiving. All my packages (except 1) have been mailed and over the past weekend, I made a trip to visit my Mother and deliver holiday packages & cheer! Seems, I am two weeks ahead...so proud of myself. I am so far ahead of myself, that last night after I emptied the dishwasher and put everything away, I realized that I hadn't yet turned it on to wash the dishes.

Holiday rituals!
Before returning to South Dakota, I had my own Thanksgiving Day routine. Rather than spend 10 hours driving and taking a day off, I decided to return to my former routine. Certainly family holidays are more memorable; but my tradition is far more relaxing! I started the day by sleeping in (in spite of the text messages that started at 7:15am). I enjoyed my coffee and English muffin, reading in bed. Most of the day was spent preparing the house and tree for Christmas. Enjoying mimosas, pizza and hot wings as the day progressed. I managed to watch a bit of football and take a break or two to read or nap. By evening the decorating was done and the decoration tubs returned to the garage. I went to bed early and worked Friday. The presents are wrapped, house is clean and the last day of the Thanksgiving weekend winding down. Sometimes solitary routines are just what I need to recharge.

Mechanical failure
When I returned to my car at the end of the work day, I could hear this unusual sound coming from inside. It was a rapid staccato clicking sound. (Kind of like the sound of a bomb in cartoons). I emptied the glove box, not there; emptied the console, not there; went around to the passenger door looking under the car & seat, not there. Shortly after I started the car and started to drive the sound stopped. Each time I parked the car and then returned, I heard the same clicking sound. I called my brother for advice, his thought was something electrical and perhaps I should be concerned about the battery going dead. I am thinking, electrical fire! At 6:45 I pulled into the car place down the street from me (it closes at 7). I went in to try to describe the problem, sound demonstration included. Of course, they were puzzled. The young man who came out to the car immediately guessed it was the "blend door" on the heater but he could not understand why it made noise when the car was not running and even when the heat/air conditioner was shut off. He did think it should eventually shut off and thus actually start in the morning. I have to bring it back for repair--of course, they have no idea how long that will take or how involved it will be, but no less than 4 hours is the estimate. I truly think these mechanics see me coming every time!! (If it starts tomorrow, I am going to call for estimates at least I won't have to demonstrate the sound now that I have a diagnosis).

Getting in Shape
One day at work I was telling my co-workers that I can't read on the treadmill anymore and I hate to have the TV up so loud the neighbors can hear it--thus I just didn't use the treadmill. One of my co-workers told me about wireless headphones, allowing one to listen to the TV and walk on the treadmill. No more excuses, I bought the things and started an exercise program. Oh my, I am so out of shape. I get so winded, I have to use the treadmill in intervals...and not at the pace I once used. I actually prefer working late than watching Judge Judy from the treadmill! The other day my co-worker asked me why I was limping--shin splints! I may never get back into shape.

Stay-cation
Last Christmas I insisted that my family not get me any gifts, since I was on a financial diet. My niece was so thoughtful. She made me a gift of "monthly activities". For November I am to spend a weekend doing only the things I like to do. So, it is a "staycation" weekend for me. Rented movies, picked up beer & pizza, put on my sweats and now ready to have a ME weekend. The last time I tried to use the VCR, I was less than successful....hopefully tonight will be different or it could turn out to be a stressful start to the weekend! (or I could improvise and watch the 7" portable DVD player--just not the same!)

Do over
A few weeks ago, my brother once again took the chain saw to my apple tree. He was kind enough to leave one long branch to hang my swing, but the rest of the branches were trimmed beyond recognition. The appearance of the tree is actually laughable but at the time, I did not want it completely gone. However, after raking up and hauling pounds and pounds of crab apples, I have decided it really does have to go! Still considering a new location for my hanging swing!

Fashion
Recently, I have tried to brighten up my fall wardrobe with a few colorful tops. I even purchased a "loop" scarf this week hoping for that "in" look. My friend, Aimee, was unable to change my saggy into sassy....I do still believe in miracles!

November
I have noticed that many of my Facebook friends are sharing daily what they are grateful for. It is after all November--Thanksgiving month. I find that I am grateful for so many things; but I don't necessarily share my thoughts. For me November is fall cleaning month, Christmas baking and decorating month as well as winter preparation month! This year winter arrived in October and certainly continues into November. So I am considering skipping November all together and simply hibernating. Which means my Christmas tree may very well be the lighted palm tree I didn't get to use in the beer garden this summer. (a whole new holiday experience).

Photo finish
When it comes to electronics, I am "still learning". So gadgets of any kind present a learning challenge for me. I have not yet learned how to print my own photos or order them from Snapfish or some other site. I have, however, learned to take the little card to Walgreens and choose the pictures I would like printed. I have yet to figure out how to crop, center or adjust any of these pictures and I have yet to figure out how to erase the pictures from the little card. So imagine my dismay this evening when I stopped at Walgreens to print the last dozen or so pictures on the card of 342, only to discover that the Kiosk would not allow me to place my order after finding the few photos I wanted.. After several tries, I summoned the clerk who advised me the equipment had broken earlier in the day and I would need to return another time. I smiled and thanked her, cursing under my breath and promising to get a new little blue card the next time I go to the photo department.--preferably at another Walgreens.

Tumbling Down
Over the years, I have teased my friends about their lack of "gracefulness". My friend, Shirley, actually fell walking into Arrowhead stadium and broke her ankle. My friend, Mary has completely wiped out in VIP seating at an outdoor concert after tripping over a ground wire. My friend, Cindy, has significant problems with balance and grace. I was so very glad they were not around to see me leaving my house on Monday morning. It was dark as I headed out the back door with my coffee, lunch bag, work bag, a plastic shopping bag and my purse. I caught my heel on the step and down I went--coffee spilling, phone flying and bags crunching (to say nothing of my bones!). I was relieved to see that at least I had not ripped my pants but more so because my friends were not there to share the experience!

The eye of the beholder
This morning I decided to dress up and take a bit more time on my appearance. I even applied eyeliner, which is something I never do. I'm not so sure it was a good idea. I am one of those people who wake up with bags under and above my eyes (certainly not because I am old). By mid morning I noticed that my neatly drawn liner was now visible half way between my lashes and my eyebrows...certainly not where I put it in the first place.

Lucky for me!
The weekend has been one long snowstorm--and it is only October 4! It started Thursday night with pounding rain which eventually became snow. My brother & sister-n-law were planning to spend the night in preparation for their son's Saturday wedding! On Friday, roads were closed and we were pretty much snowed in. Although they had a hotel reservation, they ended up spending the day and night. No wedding rehearsal as planned. When the power went out we watched a movie on the DVD player and called it an early night. It continued to snow into the morning, but that didn't stop my brother from starting the arduous process of shoveling out his car and thus the driveway! It was an all day task, but he was persistent. When the snow plow went by early this morning, he was back outside clearing the driveway to the street again! Lucky for me they were here or I might never have gotten out of my garage. At least, not until the 36 inches of snow melted. Doubt seriously that they are feeling at all lucky since the wedding had to be postponed.

Lions & tigers & bears
Sunday was a beautiful day so I decided to finish my outdoor painting project. I bravely climbed the ladder and crawled onto the roof...trying to remain positive. Almost immediately the spiders were crawling next to me and bees were swarming about my head. Oddly enough, my internal voice was singing "ladders and spiders and bees, oh my!" Couldn't get that song out of my head. I hurried through my chores and retreated indoors!

Ready for the Rocking Chair
I have been making a few self observations recently. All of which either suggest that I am getting old, boring or both: 1) I felt relief at spending my entire Sunday indoors with a good book because it was raining outside; 2) I have the nightly TV listings bookmarked on my computer and check them each morning as I plan my evening; 3) I greet my fish first thing in the morning and talk to it occasionally; and 4) I am super excited that the new TV season is finally here....It must be time to get a LIFE or retire!

Entertainment
I was able to spend several days with my 2 yr old nephew and 3 yr old niece. I discovered it takes a great deal of energy to keep up with two toddlers. I forgot how to "properly push" the swings; splash in the bathtub; play dress up and hunt for bugs....some things must not be like riding a bicycle. I did have the opportunity to catch up on the latest movies--Snow White, Shrek 3 and Peter Pan. Entertaining the first time around, not so much the second and the third. At least cereal is still a good breakfast choice and ice cream is good anytime!

Small town resourcefullness
When I left Cheyenne this morning, my gas gauge told me I had approximately 75 miles until I needed a fill. I programmed the GPS and headed out of town, anticipating a gas station within the first 20 miles. Unfortunately, it was a bit late when the sign on the interstate read "next services 65 miles". But my GPS signaled a turn ahead in 12 miles. I trusted that I would be travelling a different route and just kept going. The back roads of Wyoming are dotted with small towns and many little taverns; however there is a shortage of gas stations. I began to panic as I continued with the "low fuel" light blinking. I pulled into a little roadside café/market whose gas pumps were covered with a big sign advertising the specials of the day. The lady inside was helpful enough to tell me to take the next right into the small town of LeGrange (4 more miles) where there were roadside pumps which required a credit card. I held my breath as I coasted into town, noticing a roadside ATM and two lone gas pumps. What a relief, or so it seemed. Apparently they were turned off for the holiday weekend. I tried both sides, my anxiety at an all time high. I saw a sign pointing to the business district, so I headed that direction. The market/café was open for business. I asked the pleasant lady inside just how far it might be to the next gas station since the local pumps were not working. Patty offered to call the folks who owned the pumps to inquire about the possibility of getting them fixed. No answer, she left a pleasant message about a "lady who was traveling through". Next she called the local elevator and then another woman who used to have extra gasoline in her garage. No luck. By now I am starting to imagine spending the 90 degree day in the car awaiting the return of pump owners. Patty tried one more local call and politely explained my plight to the voice on the other end of the line. When she hung up the phone she provided me with directions to a farm just outside of town and advised me to stop at the third house on the gravel road, saying they were expecting me. I knocked twice to no avail when a large farm truck pulled into the drive. A pleasant gentleman introduced himself and made small talk. He walked toward a gas pump and said he would unlock it and get me on my way. As I handed over a twenty and thanked him profusely, he reminded me to do a favor for someone else some day. I gratefully agreed without hesitation! Lesson Learned.....

The scenic route
Yesterday I spent an hour getting ready to attend the wedding of a friend from work. I left the house 45 minutes before the start of the big event...after programming my GPS. It was an outdoor location somewhere in the Black Hills. I followed the directions precisely, taking each curve at the designated 35 mph. When "Thomasine" announced I had reached my destination, I turned into a gravel driveway thinking there must be some sort of venue up the hill behind the barn. Not the case, however. I quickly exited the small yard and headed back to the highway. I kept driving without seeing anything that looked like a "destination". I turned around and started back and again Thomasine reminded me when I had reached my destination. So this time, I pulled onto the property across the road in spite of "destination is on the left". It this was it, I was certainly the only one there. Well, me and the horses. Now I decided to dig out the invitation and follow those directions, which were no more helpful than Thomasine. I breathed a sigh of relief when I approached a woman getting her mail (out in this uninhabited land). She, however, had no idea where to find Copper Canyon Lodge, but suggested I keep driving for a few more miles. Following her advice, I kept going into the Black Hills National Forest. After 5 miles I turned around and retraced my route--no wedding balloons in sight. I frantically texted a friend who was going to see if she had made it and HOW she got there. No response. So I tried again, without Thomasine's help. I drove for what seemed like miles before seeing balloons at the entrance of a long drive. Hopefully it doesn't matter that I was only there for the processional (must have been a short ceremony)..I was only 25 mins late. I offered my congratulations and talked for a bit. When I started the car to return to town, the "low fuel" warning blinked at me. Ahhhh, I have really never been a fan of weddings!

Quiet evening planning
Yesterday was one of those days that one gets through by thinking about the one thing they plan to do to unwind when it is over. Some people plan a quiet dinner, a long walk or a leisurely soak in the bath or hot tub. By noon, I was already thinking about the view of the full moon from my back yard swing. Of course, it is only quiet and relaxing once the neighbor children are tucked into bed. At 9:30 I put on my flip flops, grabbed a cold beer from the fridge and headed out for my well-deserved quiet time. The moon provided just enough light through the trees to guide my trek across the yard. A flashlight might have been a better choice, however. Unfortunately, I did not discover the large, thick spider web until it clung to my face and hair. I discovered the spider when it crawled onto my arm. Needless-to-say, I had a change in plans.

The magic of children
Isn't it wonderful how sometimes a child's laughter can brighten even the darkest of days. Last weekend, four-year old Haley and her mom stopped by for a bit. Haley is quite a talker and always engaging. To keep her entertained, I offered her the opportunity to "hula hoop". Watching her send the "hallow hoop" (as she called it) was quite entertaining. Her mother was as surprised as I that she could actually keep it moving with her cute little wiggles. As we laughed, she just cracked herself up with how funny she was. Ahh, such music to my ears.

A Classic
The most classic look of the Rally was a far cry from leather, boots or tattoos. I had to stop for gas at a station half way between Sturgis and Rapid City. It was crowded with motorcycles coming and going from every direction. As I pulled up to the pump, I noticed a silver car that resembled my own parked at the next pump over. I was awestruck by the little old lady who had just finished filling her tank. A frail little lady, probably at least 70 made her way through the throng of bikes without a moment's hesitation. She was wearing a flowing floral skirt and white blouse, beige strapped pumps, and carrying an oversized brown leather purse. She completed her ensemble with a bright red tightly fitting hat that appeared to be made of nylon netting material. I nearly followed her into the station to get a better look; but instead, I watched the looks of the many bikers (male and female) who may have shared my reaction "What a classy woman"....

Hairy Looks
It seems the men of the Rally generally wear the same black t-shirts, leather vests, jeans and boots. They make their own fashion statements with their hair--or lack thereof. For every bald/shaved-head seen on a bike there are at least two or three others with long braids or shaggy mops. Those that make a statement with their beards are unique. I wonder how they manage to eat, drink or smoke with their long (some covering their bellies) bushy, unkempt beards. Then I wonder about the women they are with....eeewww, the idea of that face kissing someone is repulsive. I did do a real double-take when I noted one man with a thick white beard that appeared to be banded in a couple spots. Truly thought he was holding a shih Tzu on his lap while driving--but, alas, just another fashion statement.

Leather looks
The styles are becoming a bit more risqué as the Rally rambles into Day 4. Certainly the theme is always leather--vests, riding gear, gloves, head gear and accessories. I have no idea what band might have been playing this evening as riders made their way to the concert locations, weaving slowly through downtown Sturgis traffic. I noted at least three, age unknown ladies on the back of bikes sporting above the knee leather boots and short-short shorts. Two were wearing tank tops and another was wearing a lace see through number over a decorative bra. I suspect the chick in the leather bikini and leather boots was not anticipating a walk on the beach, but she will no doubt get plenty of attention. Perhaps this is her rain gear!

Unofficial Day 2
Friday after work, I joined a friend for drinks in Sturgis. There were plenty of cycles on the way there, but I did not notice any remarkable attire. However, I did see a couple outfits worth mentioning.... As we finished our drinks at our outdoor table, my friend seemed to stop in mid-sentence and forget her train of thought. Walking through the parking lot toward the door were two unforgettable less than young women. One was wearing very tight cut-off shorts that appeared extremely uncomfortable, her black biker boots provided the finishing touch. Her companion (who I suspect was her mother) was wearing a tightly form-fitting top displaying voluptuous, firm breasts with a large gaudy necklace to highlight the cleavage. Personally, I am feeling rather good about my age but it gets so much better. As I was turning onto the Interstate, I noticed a leather-clad biker pulled off the side of the road. I did a double-take and nearly hit the car in front of me as I gawked at the 70+ year old, grey, long-haired, weathered faced woman astride her Harley. Damn, I look good for my age!!

Rally attire
The Sturgis Rally officially starts on 8/5 but the motorcycle enthusiasts have been arriving all week and preparing for the annual party. Of course, they are difficult to ignore; so, I have decided to watch for the most interesting/outlandish looks of The 2013 Rally. Today I saw two looks that top the list thus far. One rather robust, bearded gentleman on a motorcycle chose his own unique helmet--a dark colored helmet with rather long animal horns on each side. I am uncertain whether he was seeking the Vikings look or that of a longhorn steer. The second sighting was a motorcycle carrying a pleasingly plump (or perhaps seriously overweight) couple wearing their "tourist" shorts and Mt. Rushmore t-shirts sporting matching designer helmets. The brightly colored helmet design--M&M candies. I'm sure the week promises many more fashion statements!!

New learning
I am trying to study for a very important test, so have taken a few days off. I spent today at home mostly reading with a little napping mixed in. The reading material is definitely unfamiliar so I have had to read some sentences several times. One particular 62 word sentence had to not only be read several times; but a dictionary was necessary. Who uses terms like lateral geniculate body of the thalamus; parietal, temporal and occipital white matter and occipital cortex? Clue #1--not a gynecologist and certainly not a social worker!!

Survival Skills
I have not had the opportunity to camp with gal pals since leaving Missouri..until this past weekend. Lucky for me, I was able to join a couple friends in a lovely self-contained, air-conditioned, spacey travel trailer this past weekend. It was the like the Ritz compared to the bucket/bleach days of the torn screen pop up camper. Oh but what fun my friends and I had back then. We learned to somehow tune out the sounds of roaring generators, laughing/crazy neighbors and mosquitos buzzing in our ears. I am happy to report that in the lap of luxury I was able to teach my young friends the value of "tuning out" or at least bringing ear plugs. After an evening of lots of talk and even more beer, we retired for the night. Unfortunately, my friends had not learned those valuable "tuning out" lessons. My snoring was apparently so disturbing that one of them slept in the backseat of the car and the other was jogging by 5:30 am just to escape the "sounds of sleep".....bet they will be prepared next time. Lesson learned!

Malfunction?
This past weekend, I listened to many of my sister's in-laws ask me where my sister gets her talent and her unending energy. This evening I had dinner with a friend from out of town who is older than me, but continues to hike, bike, travel the world and work full-time. I am beginning to think I must have a manufacturer's defect...if only there was a warranty.

Comparisons
This has been a month for family reunions it seems. My father's family gathered together for a small informal affair at the community center in our hometown. We shared photos and stories and managed to catch up a bit. This past weekend my sister hosted a family reunion for her husband's family. It was a well-planned event with many out-of-town guests. They spent several days together sharing laughter, memories and good food & wine. I joined them at a fancy restaurant the last night of their reunion. I gained a new perspective on the "simple" life and family connections...

Memories
I met an old friend in Dickinson, ND for the 4th of July weekend. This is the town where my son was born many years ago. I drove around trying to find familiar landmarks and the first house we ever owned, without much success. Even the Hardees I once passed on my way home is now a Pizza Hut. Nothing seemed the same. Yet, the memories my friend and I talked and laughed about were as familiar as my favorite shoes. After 30 years, we continue to share memorable moments that won't change with the scenery.

Pondering
I have probably never had an appreciation for fireworks like many people do. I was so glad we lived in a state that only allowed snakes and sparklers when Justin was a little boy. He sometimes was treated to the opportunity to "light" his own firecrackers if he spent the holiday with other relatives, but NEVER when he was with me. Even as a teenager and certainly now, he is like a addict when it comes to fireworks. He must buy every noisy, colorful "masterpiece" the Chinese create in order to celebrate the 4th of July. Expense seems to be of no concern, let alone the idea that in 30 minutes it is all up in smoke. I am wondering if I am somehow responsible for this extreme attraction to fireworks.

Pimp My Ride
For the past week, I have had to drive my mother's 2000 Buick while mine is being repaired. Let me describe these "wheels"....big brown, 4 door with "old lady" written all over it. What distinguishes it from the retirement community is the taped up rear passenger window which no longer functions. I suspect old people with hearing problems are able to shut of the hearing aide and not notice the whistle of the wind. Today it became a true redneck eyesore....the front passenger window refuses to return to the top, so double layers of plastic and tape have been applied to the entire front window/door. Hopefully this will keep out the rain, but I anticipate the sound will send me over the edge in the five hour "return to owner" drive coming up. (I will say it fits right in at the Walmart parking lot) Still wondering if my sanity might be worth the $385 they want to fix the damn thing......

Changes over time
When we were kids, we used to climb to the top of the barn, holding a rope. Once we reached the top we would swing to the other side. Sometimes we walked across the ceiling beams pretending to be tightrope walkers from the circus. One time we actually managed to climb onto the roof of the barn and sit at the peak teasing our frightened mother below! I am trying to remember just when heights began to scare me. I now avoid the ferris wheel although it is the only carnival ride that doesn't make me sick. I bravely climbed onto the garage roof to help shingle a few years ago. I remember that when my brother and nephew came down for a drink or shade, I stayed put knowing I would never go back up if I came down. Friday after work, I opened the extension ladder and began scraping the upstairs window trim with great trepidation. I even managed to crawl onto the roof to scrape the wooden trim at the edges, Saturday, I continued my mission knowing that each step up the ladder might be my last. It has been a productive but miserable weekend. The wind is blowing today, granting me a reprieve from my balancing act. I am thinking I will not be able to muster up the courage to continue until I have at least made out a will.

Road Trip
Nearly twenty years ago, my sister and I took our kids on a camping trip from Rapid City to Washington state. She has always referred to it as the "vacation from hell". Neither of us had ever towed, parked, opened or used a pop-up camper before that trip. Our kids bring it up every now and then--mixed reviews. Kathy &I had the opportunity to drive that same highway last week. Our drive there was hurried, but we took some time on the way back to try to find some of the spots we visited years ago. Of course, we were both very glad we weren't camping; but, a bit nostalgic about those times with our kids.

Family Dynamics
Everyone has family "stuff", even mine. Until five years ago, I lived far away from family. It seemed to me that we were always just a phone call away and Ma Bell appreciated that! Since returning to South Dakota, not only are Verizon and Ma Bell happy; but so are half the gas stations across the state. I have had the opportunity to spend quality time with my siblings, my mother, my nieces/nephews, in-laws and out-laws and family friends. While that is, of course, a blessing--sometimes I miss the closeness of "long distance" talks and the anticipation of vacation at home. Recently, I have also been reminded of some of the other benefits of being miles away from small town living and the standards of responsibility.....

Look around
Of course, church is a spiritual encounter; but sometimes I simply seeing the blessings around me is a more spiritual experience. Last evening, I watched the interactions of couples throughout the church. Three rows up a young "dating" couple smiled cutely at each other throughout the service (he a Catholic, she apparently not). In front of me was a 40+ couple, not wearing wedding rings, but beaming with love with each look and gesture. A row ahead of them, was a couple easily in their 70's..he rested his hand gently on her shoulder and they kissed as a sign of "peace"....Behind me a young couple smiled across the top of the heads of their three noisy little toddlers, sharing a knowing nod. Yes, love is all around me.....God is love!

Rear-view
The other night as I was preparing to hop in the shower, I caught sight of my backside in the bathroom mirror. Oh my....more dimples than you might see at the Shrine Circus. I am either gonna have to shower in the dark, or get back to an exercise program!

Yet another lesson ...
It has been a beautiful weekend--in the 70's with very little wind. So I tackled my yard work--mowing, weed eating, pulling weeds in the garden, potting vegetables, leaf blowing, raking, fertilizing, mulching and planting grass seed. Alas, the lesson--prior to the last snow storm, I planted grass seed in the corner of the yard. Thought I was so smart to capture the moisture of snow to germinate the grass seed. Sadly, that did not happen so on Saturday I replanted--not just the corner, but I planted seed in some of the winter "bare spots" too. I tried to ignore it last evening, but realized my mistake this morning....seems every bird in the county showed up for Mother's Day Buffet of freshly laid grass seed. Now I know why they put those burlap things over the top when they plant grass.

Better with Age
I had a medical appointment....while the rest of me might be malfunctioning, sagging, drying up and wrinkling; my eyes have improved. Who says one doesn't improve with age?

Charity Walk
I volunteered to participate in the annual MS Walk this year without a second thought. It is a great cause and how tough can it be. On Saturday morning, I joined my friends for the three mile paved walk. We were circling the same space 6 times. The third time around I was feeling rather proud of myself for keeping up the pace and not being winded. On the last trip around, I gratefully headed for my car (at a much slower pace). I noticed that I was walking alone, so I turned to ask my friends if they were going to go in for the promised pizza. They both shook their heads and had the audacity to tell me we still had one more lap to complete. I disagreed, but they remained quite firm. They did offer me the opportunity to sit down while they finished the walk....since they didn't offer to call it good, I joined them for the last trip around. As we walked to our cars, my friend advised me that I had just completed a 5K--who knew. Then she suggested that in the future I should not wear jeans for such a run! I am just grateful they couldn't see me hobble about my house for the next 24 hours trying to get the kink out of my hip! This may be my first and last 5K.....

Today was an education day at the office. I paid $50 to take an online pre-test for an upcoming certification exam that I will be taking this summer. I read through each question and frantically looked up possible answers in order to complete the test within the allotted 2-hour time frame. With a sigh of relief I pressed the submit and score button. Sadly my score was far from passing...I was exhausted and devastated. As I reviewed my results for the third time, I discovered that I had actually taken the wrong pre-test....I took the test for nurses as in medical knowledge! The words of my 4th grade teacher before the Iowa Basics testing slapped me upside the head "Use a No. 2 pencil and READ the DIRECTIONS carefully" Now do I pay another $50 to take the correct pre-test?

Traveling the world
My sister asked me to help her with a request from her 2nd grade grandson for school. Since I was going to the Denver Zoo, she asked me to take a couple photos for him to share with his class. The photo also needed to include Flat Stanley. I had never heard of Flat Stanley before and thought it really was a rather cute idea. So, not only did he accompany me to the Zoo but I brought him along to the Denver Hard Rock Café the next day. While holding him up in front of the sign to be photographed, a rather handsome young man comes around the bar and actually says hello to Flat Stanley. The waitress came over and shared the story of her own nephew's school project and receiving Flat Stanley in the mail to circulate as well. I determined that Flat Stanley is far more a world traveler than I and he doesn't even need to bring luggage or ID.

Beauty Secrets
I quickly decorated our hotel room for Fantasy Vacation on Friday evening and eagerly awaited my friends. As soon as everything was carried in, we all sat down, beverages in hand, to catch up. We have this ability to start gabbing like we just saw each other yesterday. In keeping with the theme, I had brought a "shot" dart game, complete with the liquor shots. My considerably younger friends were more interested in skin care, make up and fashion than I ever remember. Seems to me they are settling in and when I am eager to party like a college coed. (Or at least pretend to try) Is something wrong with this picture?

Fantasy Vacation
Apparently the winter weather has been as depressing for my friends in North Dakota as it has been for me. We meet annually for a fantasy vacation...thank goodness it is this weekend. For the past several days I have gotten text messages from each of them expressing their excitement at our upcoming plans. The best message yet was sent this morning to all of us from Joan: "I am feeling really gross and ugly, so if you could go that extra effort and not look so good, I would greatly appreciate it". We all responded in kind. My suggestion was we just wear our sweats which Joan agreed if we could utlize "paper bags" as well. It's gonna be a great time with friends no matter how we look.

The Dating Game
I am so out of practice at this dating thing....spent as much time getting ready yesterday as I did trying to figure out how to graciously opt for a cab ride home. I think I have read too many fiction murder mysteries that involve dating/disappearance/death. I don't remember it ever being this complicated.

Cost Benefit Ratio
After a week or more of warm temperatures, the weather man promised a serious storm with a strong chance of snow. Monday the predicted snowfall was in excess of 20" making travel impossible. When I returned from work, I hopped in the shower, packed some clothes and a few groceries before heading back to the office. I bet I am the only one hurrying to work to get "snowed out". I reasoned that being at work made far more sense than taking vacation time to be snowed in at home. I made two trips from the car, with all my necessities before settling in for the long winter's night. (Inflated the bed, stored my clothing and such, and advised security I'd be spending the night) I congratulated myself for being so prepared. Until I went to use my cell phone.....this was about the same time as the "hot dog" security guy came to check me out and the creepy cleaning crew started their shift.
I locked myself in (great plan since they all have keys) and assessed my situation. I have never watched that show Survivor, but I began to identify with the contestants. The room was stifling hot but I couldn't open the door; no phone or contact with the outside world; no way to know or see who or what was making all the noise in the hallway; and the realization that I was eventually going to have to venture down the hall to pee (more than once or twice). I'm not sure whether it was the under-inflated mattress, my anxiety or my temperamental bladder that kept me awake; but, it was not a restful night. As I muddled through Tuesday, I considered whether one less vacation day was really worth this price..... I didn't dare think about it too long since the roads were closed and there was no end in sight.

Mr. Wilson
The spring weather has brought out not only the daffodils and robins, but the neighbor children, too. I have had to wait while they moved their go carts from my driveway at the end of the day, smile when they stand with faces pressed against my new glass front door and hold my breath as they jump from the front step to their awaiting bikes, trikes and other wheeled contraptions. Today when I returned after work, I was greeted by two small boys hanging from the tree in my front yard. As I went to the mailbox the oldest one let me know he had already checked the box and I had lots of mail today. Before I could close the garage door, the younger boy was already at the car door with his smiling little face and questions about the contents of my messy garage. I waited for him to return to the driveway before closing the garage door, feeling very much like Mr. Wilson in the Dennis the Menace cartoon. Is this when I yell, Martha....?

Computer technology
My favorite hockey team, UND Fighting Sioux, was playing in the national season tournament over the weekend. Since I began my financial diet, I have only 22 TV channels, none of which is a sports channel. So I explored the option of computer "streaming" (whatever that means) of the game. Late Friday afternoon I was able to watch my team win and move to the next level in the Frozen Four. Saturday was a different story. When I attempted to view the game online, I was redirected to the Midcontinent page which required a user name and password. Apparently this is not the same user name/password I use to pay my bill OR they were having technical difficulties. Half way through the second period (I could hear the game) I found a website that would provide live coverage for $7.95. I provided my credit card information and was "successful". Imagine my dismay when I could still not get a live webcast of the game. I immediately sent my email requesting assistance and continued to listen to the game, which was steadily going downhill. At the end of the game, which my team lost, I received an email telling me that the game was only available on audio-feed, do not reply to this message. Guess this was one of those times when I should have left well enough alone....lesson learned!

Thursday
My son plays in a Texas Hold'em league every Thursday night. Like many sportsmen, he has his own rituals. He arrives early so that he always gets the same chair and before he leaves the house he calls his mother to hear the same words of encouragement..."be poised", "be confident", don't try to kill the cards and "be the winner". His calls are like clock work...4:45 pm every Thursday evening. If he doesn't reach me and the cards aren't kind, it is my fault. I smile every time I answer his call and hope he plays well. It occurs to me also, that I hope he continues to play cards every week--otherwise, I might only hear from him if he needs something.

Look where you are going
I had a 3 o'clock meeting at a local coffee shop this afternoon. Unfortunately, I did not allow myself enough time, so as usual, I was in a big hurry. I was so proud of myself as I pulled into a parking spot with 1 minute to spare. I hurried down the sidewalk and quickly opened the door when it occurred to me something wasn't quite right. I stepped back and went around the corner to the other door--still not right. When I looked up at the sign, I discovered that I was entering an attorney's office on the corner a block before the coffee shop. I at least noticed a couple new antique stores as I raced down the block to my destination arriving 5 minutes late. Grandma always said "haste makes waste!"

winter travel
A month ago, I was stranded for hours at the Denver airport due to weather. At the time it was far from funny. However, I had a difficult time holding back a chuckle (really a belly laugh) when my sister called now on Day 2 at the Denver airport to report they are not likely to get out anytime soon. At least she has a tan!

Hearing limitations
Approximately 18 months ago, I unexpectedly lost most of the hearing in my left ear. Since then I have made many adjustments to accommodate this limitation. Others sometimes find my adjustments rather annoying. For instance, I must maintain control of the remote control because I automatically mute all TV commercials (they play too loudly and often have music); music is especially troublesome so the radio remains off whenever I am in the car and I try to plug my right ear when music plays during a movie or in a closed space. I now have a tendency to turn my "good ear" to those who are talking to me on my left side--which means I am looking behind them without making eye contact. It's funny how many people just stop talking, perhaps feeling ignored. So most often I just appear to listen intently and shake my head. This tactic does not work well when someone has asked a question which requires an answer. It was especially unappreciated tonight by the waitress who repeated herself a couple of times and finally walked away. I have no idea what she wanted, but I smiled and nodded...repeatedly.

Humerous--not so much
I have been dogsitting for my sister for the past 10 days. As I have mentioned previously, it has had it perks. I have pointed out that filling a dozen birdfeeders has not been my cup of tea. I have changed my mind however since one of the dogs has been sick for the past three days. Now when I say sick, I mean explosive diarhhea sick. Cleaning up that mess makes birdfeeding seem like a walk in the park. I was describing the smelly messes (4) that I cleaned up between 2:30 and 5:30 this morning to my younger sister. Her response was far from empathetic--"It's kinda funny". Personally I see nothing funny about this situation. Especially, since I must have stepped in some in the garage because I could smell dog shit all day....
I'm gonna go feed the birds and smile all the while!!

Stretching my mind
I lead a rather uneventful life but I take a few minutes everyday to stretch my mind by adding new words to my vocabulary. I do this each time that I try to plug letters into the slots on Words with Friends trying to make the most points possible. Of course, I have no idea the definition of any of these new words--that's why I don't do crossword puzzles!

For the birds....
Housesitting has its perks...indoor temperature well above the 66 degrees at home; a fireplace in the bedroom instead of the electric blanket at home; 12 times the 21 TV channels I have at home, including UND sports channel and the HGTV Network; a new temprupedic mattress, 15+ years newer than mine; an attached garage with remote entry as opposed to my detached garage without working remote; daily newspaper delivery rather than the e-edition; and a closet full of clothing much more stylish than the well-worn, outdated wardrobe at home.
In spite of the perks, I have discovered that keeping a dozen bird feeders filled is an unpleasant task if one is really not a "bird" person. Watering plants or walking dogs--no problem but this bird feeder activity requires a talent I lack. I know this because I managed to inadvertently open a feeder I was filling, leaving a large pile of seeds on the deck AND who knew there are so many varieties of birdseeds in the first place. There will be no "bird buffet" while I am doing the cooking!

Coffee lovers
I am housesitting at my sister's for a few days while they are out of town. I slept wonderfully in her temperapedic bed, between the new "sock monkey" designed flannel sheets. This morning, like every morning, I headed to the kitchen to make the coffee. I had remembered to bring my own coffee since Kathy often has the very dark and flavored kinds at her house. I filled the reservoir and opened the cupboard to locate the coffee filters. I cleaned out two cupboard shelves, searched six drawers and finally gave up. Ended up using a couple of those little packets she always brings home from hotels. I will point out that Kathy is NOT a coffee drinker and therefore, has no appreciation for that first cup of coffee in the morning. I will also point out that she is NOT a beer drinker, which is why the beer at her house is not in the refrigerator....I will say no more.
(I tried to include a picture of all the stuff I removed from the cupboards in my desperate search, but was not successful with that either)

Nothing off limits when you are 4
I have chuckled to myself several times in the last few days. When a bright, happy four-year old is the entertainment, it is impossible not to laugh at yourself and at life. Last evening we were having dinner at a local restaurant when Haley pointed to her future great-grandma and said "How come that girl doesn't talk?" I suspect her mother could have crawled under the table. Tonight with other members of her future family she repeatedly sang (loudly sang) happy birthday to the ONE person who would rather have a root canal than a birthday. Had that been the case, my dentist would be a very wealthy man; however, I am perhaps scarred for life.....

Friday night excitement
My income tax return was deposited in my checking account today--Hooray! I am actually more thrilled at paying off credit cards from the comfort of my office than I would be to spend that money traveling, partying, remodeling, getting some cosmetic work done, ......or anything else that requires money! This financial diet appears to have an end in sight....such a relief!

Put this to music
My neighbors now have" three noisy boys, three loud trucks, two barking dogs, two motor boats, one old camper and a laden apple tree".... What they don't have is a garage, dog house or two-car driveway.

Flurries..
After several days soaking up the Arizona sun, I boarded a plane to return home. There was plenty of time in Denver this time so no need hurry, weather conditions created delay after delay. Mother Nature truly slapped me in the face when I finally was able to board my little puddle jumper plane on the tarmack--cold wind, snow and ice. It seemed rather funny that the ladder like steps for boarding were replaced with a steep slippery ramp. I am beginning to think that traveling is becoming more and more like Survivor.

Routines
Yesterday, Saturday, was my first full day of vacation...I spent it doing exactly what I would do at home--sleeping late, reading a good book, snacking and drinking a few beers. I fear I am so predictable. BUT, it was much more enjoyable spending my predictable day in the sunshine!

The joys of travel...
When you live in South Dakota, winter vacations are a necessity to survival. However, they are never a guarantee when the weather is considered. Yesterday morning I boarded a little puddle-jumper airplane to travel to Denver where I would be connecting with friends and then flying to Arizona. Apparently it was too cold overnight, because the plane was plugged in and being charged as we boarded. We were assured it would only be a few minutes. Fifteen minutes after backing from the airport, the plane sputtered and came to a standstill. After another 20 minutes we finally took off. Since I had only 52 minutes to make my connection I was not optimistic, but relieved that I had checked my luggage. When the small plane landed, I had 24 minutes to make my connection. A piece of cake--however, I deboarded the plane onto the ground, thus I had to run down hallways and around ground crew to get to the airport. Out of breath, I arrived in the terminal to discover that my next flight was boarding 31 gates away. It was a modern miracle that I made it in time to board...only to spend the next 20 minutes idling at the gate. Gave me time to catch my breath and put myself back together.

Product
Since I got my hair cut earlier this year, I have struggled to find a look that isn't "old", "boyish", "over the ears" and mostly "not difficult or time consuming". I have been a terrible failure...everytime I ask someone a bit younger they always tell me it is all about the product. After purchasing everything from "short, sexy hair" to nexus to everything in between. On mornings like today...it is just funny how much effort I put into looking presentable and by the time I get to work I resemble MOE....

Traveling Salesmen
Last evening I made the mistake of answering the doorbell after 7pm. The young man handed me a package of kleenex and asked if anyone in the home used tissues. I quickly responded "No" and prepared to close the door. He started to dash away and called, "let me get what goes with them...I will only be a moment". I debated whether to simply close the door and keep the tissues, but didn't want to be rude. When he entered the house carrying a huge box containing the ever popular Kirby vacuum cleaner, I groaned! I explained that I was watching a tv show and didn't want to miss it. So with a sincere tone, he promised to take only 10 minutes. What he didn't say was that in 10 minutes another vacuum cleaner salesman would show up at the door to take his place. Now the timer starts all over when the original salesman leaves "Charles" to close the deal. He had at least 24 of those little circle filters, filled with disgusting dirt he had pulled from my clean carpet and was offering to clean the curtains when I finally stopped him. He had also pulled my vacuum cleaner from the closet to demonstrate just how ineffective my product was--as effective as I was at getting rid of him!! Anyway after 2 hours and 4 phone calls to his "boss" reporting that he was just packing up--he finally left. Without a sale, I am happy to report. But what a wasted night--for both of us! At least I can laugh about it...suspect he was not laughing!

February 14
For many reasons, I have never been a fan of Valentine's Day. There were many years that I actually took the day off to avoid the stream of floral deliveries to everyone in the office except me. My niece, Tracy, used to call it "thank God I am not in a dysfunctional relationship day"...Warmed my heart and changed my attitude. So some my equally "losers in love" friends joined me for the annual Celebrate VD with friends Day! Always a great time. Thanks to Skype I was able to celebrate this year with my friend, Cindy, in Missouri! And this year there was no concern about falling off the bar stool, calling a cab or a huge bar tab....another heartfelt celebration!

Exercise
Back on the treadmill today....no heavy sweating, panic attack, heart attack or leg cramps. Even able to manage without a fall. Guess this means there is nothing physical preventing me from getting back into shape. Tomorrow I may even start it up....

New neighbors--changes
Earlier this summer, my religious neighbors sold their home to a young couple with three noisy little boys, two barking dogs and one very obnoxiously loud truck (in addition to two others). Think about it, a young couple with three pick up trucks...they have no concept of mileage and gas apparently. Anyway, each time they leave or return they rev (really rev) the motor to the point that my windows vibrate. So, after a rude awakening at 3:35am yesterday morning, I decided I had to at least rearrange my bedroom and move the bed away from the sound check area. Let me start by saying, it is no easy task to move all the bedroom furniture. Perhaps the worst moment occurred when my feet became tangled in the answering machine cord and I landed on my hip with both feet pounding into the wall. Not a graceful maneuver and certainly not pain-free. At least I didn't break anything...well, except the answering machine when I tossed it into the wall for good measure! How will I survive summer when the windows are open, the dogs are barking and the kids are climbing the fence??

Whooops...
Have you seen the card that says "of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!"? I am beginning to identify with that quote. I drove home from a conference today driving a car from work, which had to be returned to the office. With a weather advisory looming, I quickly unloaded my belongings and headed north to the office. When I am 23 miles from home, it occurs to me that in my haste, I have failed to bring my purse or my office keys. Now what? I can return home and try to explain the extra miles on the car or I can go to the office and ask security to let me in although I have no ID. I have pulled over on an off-ramp pondering my options when I decide I should simply return home for keys. It is not until I am back on the Interstate, that I realize I have returned to the Northbound lane....Not only am I forgetful but now I am confused as well. I fear the nursing home may be just around the corner! (Thank goodness I was able to reach a friend from work who lives nearby, collected her office keys, returned the car and found my way back home)

Meditation
I signed up for a free meditation class...have never mastered meditation nor have I taken a class before. Attended my first class on Monday evening, what an experience. I have never been "smudged" until now--no one explained but I think it has to do with negative energy entering the room. I took my seat next to a 70 something woman from Ireland named Bridget. I was surprised to see the room fill to at least 14 with one young man and women of many ages. Thankfully, there was another meditation virgin attending her first class as well. Everyone else knew each other well-perhaps too well. The lights were dimmed, eyes closed and the relaxing music began with a recorded male voice directing the breathing in and out. Within 60 seconds I realized that I had a death grip on the arms of my chair so I rested my arms on my lap. I will say it was very relaxing--I think Bridget was sleeping next to me, although I did not hear any snoring. The other "newbie" continued to chew her gum faster than a power nail gun, but I do think I relaxed. The instructor said I seemed to melt-until it was time for the Tibet bowl. (I will say no more as I am in my "positive, happy place"..

My mother's daughter
I have become more aware of my "quirks" -- choosing the Halmark Movie and commercials as priority television; putting the smallest bit of left overs into a clean margerine container; increasing the volume on the tv; forgetting what I ran downstairs to get and most disturbing--talking to my plants and calling them by name when I water them. Thank goodness I can't whistle or I would certainly fear I was becoming my mother!! Personally, I don't find this funny in the least!

Bottle of Wine--fruit of the vine
My friend, Michelle, is a wine drinker. When we talk via Skype, she always sits back and sips from her wine glass and seems so calm. Last night, I thought I would join her for a toast and glass of wine. I have apparently never learned to sip....when the bottle was empty, she was just finishing her first glass. When will I ever learn moderation?? Perhaps if I am ever calm.

Planning family time
I have determined that trying to schedule a short get-away with family is like nailing jello to a tree. We aren't talking about one weekend or even one month....it seems I am the only one with no life and everyone else has something going on from now until doomsday!

Men & repairs
I have always gotten that "condescending" look when describing how something is broken--whether it is the car, the refrigerator or other home gadgets. A few weeks ago my garage door would start down and then automatically return up when it reached a point about 2 feet from the ground. For several days I would try realigning the little green lights, curse, try again, remove all debri, curse and try again. Finally one morning I simply manually opened the damn door myself after 20 minutes of trying to coax it to work. For about a week I had been manually opening and closing the door when my brother-in-law stopped by to check it out. He gave me that "look", pulled down on the red handle and directed me to hit the button. The door magically lifted and closed--he gave me the "you are as dumb as a box of rocks look" and asked if I had any other projects. The next morning the door opened with the flip of the switch and actually closed as I backed out of the driveway. That was the ONLY day it worked--I have been raising and lowering it by hand ever since. Suspect that if I mention it to Dave, he will tell me it must be something I am doing wrong!!

Analyze this
This was a four-day work week for me; however, each day seemed longer than the last and my to do list multiplied faster than gerbils. So over the lunch hour today I reserved two movies from Redbox with a plan to sit back and enjoy mindless entertainment with a cold beer or two. I have spent the past four and half hours watching two movies...rather than relaxing, I have diagnosed every character, analyzed family and relationship dynamics and formulated treatment plans in my head. I really must find another way to relax.....hmmmmmm.

Oh well
I have a life-long friend who has consistently had strong opinions which DO NOT parallel mine. Whenever we have a discussion, and my talking points might make more sense (per my assessment), he tells me "Your mind's not right, Doc".... I found myself shaking my head and saying the same thing tonight as I drove several miles past the tanning salon and parked at the hairdressers when it occurred to me I was actually going to tan....maybe my subconscious was telling me it's time to color!!

Please don't call me mam....
This weekend, I certainly discovered that I cannot keep up like I once did. Saturday I met friends in Deadwood around 4 pm. I drink as fast as I talk and I was doing lots of talking! The entire group (at least 12) of us were wearing red sweatshirts with the Red Solo Cup logo. Very much a party spirit--even singing kareoke. I have no idea what time it was, but I suspect it wasn't much past 11 when I managed to miss the chair when I sat down. (still wonder if someone pulled out from under me) As I am trying to pull myself up a young man has the audacity to ask "Are you ok, Mam?" Once again I am glad there were no pictures!

Footwear
After a long day of work, I hurried home to change clothes and run a few quick errands. I quickly pulled on my comfortable sweatpants and matching shirt, warm socks and ran downstairs to put on my tennies and hit the road. I noticed that I was wearing two different shoes, as I went to untie the laces at the tanning bed. At least they were on the right feet!

Just gotta laugh
I was fortunate enough to leave South Dakota just as the "big snow and cold blast" hit the area. Lucky me, I was headed south to Arizona. Is it too funny to think that while I was there, they experienced their coldest weather in recent history? I was not exactly laughing, however, when the water lines froze in the motorhome and I was required to use the facilities at the nearest gas station. Darn those tricks of Mother Nature!

Just like riding a bike?
I am making plans to meet an old friend for the weekend. We used to have some great times--the ones you can't quite remember and that is probably a good thing. The last few weeks, I have been remembering some of those times and feeling almost giddy. Of course, I am not as young as I once was--but as Toby Keith says--I'm as good once as I ever was! If that's true, we might be arrested this time around.

Projects
I did not make myself a list of things I was going to accomplish after the first of the year. But, each time I have opened my refrigerator for the past 6 mos I have said, I gotta clean this sometime soon. Well--soon arrived today. I decided not to put any new items into the refrigerator until it was cleaned. Too bad, today was trash day. I discovered over half of the contents on the refrigerator door shelves have overstayed their expiration dates. The record--November 2008, second place March 2010 with everything else outdated in 2011 and prior to the middle of 2012. It's a miracle I haven't poisoned myself or someone else. Of course, at least 25% of the items returned to their places have expiration dates prior to April 2013. I can look forward to repeating this process in a few years. I didn't have this problem when I moved routinely!!

In some cases
Managed to hurry home from work today, pick up my dry cleaning (the cost of a weeks groceries) and head to the tanning bed for a "warm rest". I noted that my skin is so dry, I wanted to ask for a dust buster rather than use that clean little towel to wipe down the bed when my time was up. Maybe they have special locations for people like me....

Blessings
Years ago, my dear neighbor, Theresa Esser (a life long Catholic) interpreted some of the Church rules to make them more manageable. For instance, if you give up alcohol for Lent it ok to start drinking at midnight on Saturday night because Sunday is a holy day rather than a day of Lent. She also advised that attendance counted as long as you arrived before the Gospel. Today I watched Mass with all the other "homebound" Catholics in SD. There was apparently some type of glitch in the programming since the Lennox sales ad came on right after the Gospel. When this happened the screen would stop and Mass would start over from the beginning. I wonder if I was tripley blessed today, since I listened to the same Gospel three times....I will have to ask Theresa next time I see her.

Quite a picture
They say one should learn to laugh at herself...in my old age that is becoming quite easy. Yesterday I was forced to leave my sick bed to run to the pharmacy for medications. I pulled my sweatpants on over my pajama bottoms and a sweatshirt over my pajama top, and traded my slippers for a pair of white tube socks. I stopped to give myself the once-over in the bathroom mirror--oh my, two day bed head is impossible to change, so I opted for a wool hat. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find the hat in the car once I arrived at the store. As I took my place in line behind the many frail elderly, I noticed a couple sidelong glances and a few folks slowly inching away. My turn was seriously delayed by the prissy little old lady in front of me who whas buying clearance items (10 and 15 cent prizes) and returning others. Her time at the counter--6 minutes, 3 seconds--her cost $14.35; my time at counter 2 min 12 seconds==total cost $60.30. Thank goodness there is no "priceless" photo to document this experience.

The lingering visit
I am trying to find the humor in my current situation. My mother stayed an entire week over Christmas, but she left me a cold that continues to linger on and on--almost like she is still here! Not sure how funny that would really be.

A New Year!
I went to bed with grand plans of starting the new year bright and early...great plans for a whole new beginning. Here it is 9:30 am and I have managed to at least get dressed (without my promised stint on the treadmill) and make the coffee. So surprised how that one glass of wine last night has put a monkey wrench in my new year's plans. (Know darn well it wasn't the beer)
Still plan to find humor in every day and laugh as much as I can!
